Evelyn Busch Klie

Symbolist

Evelyn Busch Klie draws from her rural Pennsylvania background and the landscapes of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania for the strong forces that present themselves as the locations and settings of her Symbolist paintings and prints. A native of Friendsville, PA, Klie currently resides and maintains a studio in Windsor, NY. She has received numerous awards for her works, including the "Solo Show Award" from the Northeast Regional 2000, Artists as Visionaries, Contemporary Gallery, Marywood University, Scranton, PA; "Painting Residency Award," from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ithaca, NY; and the "Best Watercolor Award," International Juried Show ’97, from the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, Summit, NJ, juried by Donald B. Kuspit, National art critic and Art Historian. Klie’s large observations in color push at the boundaries of traditional watercolor, by imposing a chemistry of heavily painted water media against that of glowing color.

Symbols grant humankind a way in which to voice instinctual feelings and a way in which to connect to deeper levels of understanding about life and oneself. As a symbolist, the bird and animal imagery within the setting of fragmented landscape, convey a very personal dialog to the viewer. Each interpretation or story may be similar or not. My concerns are for the displacement of vital life forms and the detrimental changes forced upon them by humans—only then left to live a meager existence and ultimate extinction.

Antoine de Saint-Expery said it well, “You become responsible forever for what you have tamed.”
