Layer of Time
“I call my recent work Layers of Time. Mixed media paintings on paper begin with photographs of doors and walls of NYC. For me, these are excavations of a collective past. The images, through my camera and my hand, mingle with a presence of the past.
Since the early 1960’s, I have been making unique books by transforming actual books into painterly and tactile works. This format has wonderful possibilities involving space/time sequences. Sometimes I alter the book by tearing, burning, cutting holes and shapes into it. Turning the pages one can see into the book as through layers of time, forward in anticipation and backward in retrospection, the drawings becoming multi-directional, ricocheting back and forth.”
