Joanne Thorne Arnold

Expressionist

It was Van Gogh who said, "Color in a picture is like enthusiasm in life". My abstract oil paintings are color fields that capture nature at our periphery. My intention is to use color by reducing it to an essence of what we feel about space and light. Instead of painting things, the idea is to paint the spirit of what we see: not the actual earth, sea, or sky, but the sensation of atmosphere.

I grew up during a cultural blast of color. Peter Max was the poster artist; his work was on practically every wall in school. Cartoons were big, television shows were in "living color" and films were in "Technicolor." It couldn’t be ignored.

The skies, the light, and the hills of the Southern Tier of New York inspire many of my compositions. The energy of my work is contemplative whether it is veils of weightless color or thin lines that suggest the figurative. Harmony and balance are central to the aesthetic.
